Hack for the Planet Frontend

Hack for the Planet Hackathon

Hack for the Planet was based around climate tech and making strides towards building a better knowledge base and software about climate change. My team placed second in our category creating a climate resilient property insurance dashboard. The team consisted of Richard Cole (backend software engineer), Jean Saung (product designer), Stanley Lee (product manager), and myself (frontend software engineer). Only the frontend code can be shared due to proprietary backend code.

Shelter Inventory

Shelter Inventory is an inventory control system for a generic shelter. This was created as part of a coding challenge for Digital Aid Seattle. It uses JavaScript and React for the frontend with Local Storage for a mock backend.

About Me

Hello and welcome! My pronouns are he/him/his.

Licensed skydiver and software engineer. I was previously an A/V Technician for Live Event Production and currently looking for employment as a Full Stack of Frontend Software Engineer, preferably within climate tech. Hardworking, eager to learn, and skilled in communicating with co-workers and clients, as demonstrated from my previous career and continued endevours.

I began my coding journey back in middle school and high school with small, static HTML pages. Since then, I have expanded my coding expertise with the help of App Academy and their online full stack coding boot camp. While studying with App Academy, I learned to code with Javascript and Python using React / Redux, SQL, Flask, PostgreSQL, HTML, CSS, Docker, and used Git and GitHub for version control and paired programming. The projects I developed have all used Git and Github, as well as currently being deployed on Render or Heroku. While learning at App Academy, I studied Test Driven Development (TDD), Object Oriented Programming (OOP), and Data Structures & Algorithms (DS&A), which have helped me become a well-rounded programmer. Since graduating in December 2022, I have continued studying Data Structures and Algorithms, learned TypeScript, volunteered with the Out In Tech Digital Corps team to create a website for a LGBTQ+ nonprofit in South Africa, worked on a contract with Meta improving my skills in Python, SQL, and RegEx through mentorship. I am currently learning C#, converting my capstone project from JavaScript to TypeScript, working with an open-source project in Sweden vizualizing climate data for Swedish residents, and with a couple startups, one working to create information dense resumes and the other supporting users at EV charging stations.

Before becoming a software engineer, I was an A/V Technician for 6 years with Alaska Universal Productions, a live event production company in Fairbanks, Alaska. While there, I set up, operated, and dismantled lighting, audio, stage, and video equipment for live events and installations. I was also an arena rigger for events that needed equipment suspended above the floor, as well as being a production assistant and film grip for a few commercial and film productions. I'm proud of the installations that I was able to do there, both in home and in businesses, as well as the skills I learned in lighting and sound design, arena rigging, interpersonal interactions, and customer service.

In my free time, I enjoy skydiving, hiking, snowboarding, rock climbing and playing video and board games. The physical, mental, and sometimes challenging nature of these activities keeps me engaged and constantly learning new techniques and skills, similar to how coding and my previous work experience has been.
